When I first saw this band at Churchills I was pretty blown away , I've always had a passion for that tribal raggea/ska sound. I personally think this band has that Surf Roots feeling. Every single person in this band is very talented. It's not everyday you see a band that plays this style of music. I especially love that they have 2 singers, one of which being a women, really awesome! If you get a chance you should check this band out! So glad to see a band that has a great deal of talent and such a powerful vibe.

Morning Again Reunion, Confirmed!

I just got off the phone with John Wylie and he confirmed the Morning Again reunion. The show will take place at Churchill's Pub in Miami on Saturday, December 11 2010. More details will be released later this week but the following bands are scheduled to play:

Unreleased Demo by Legendary Miami Hardcore band, ANGER. It was recorded prior to the classic Miami FL LP on SPV Records. This recording has their original Bassist Kelly Ross and it was recorded at ANGERS rehearsal spot on Hialeah Drive. Many other Miami bands practiced here as well as, Out of Spite, Brethren and Mindframe. I believe this demo was recorded on an 8 Track by Guitarist Dennis Munos(SOLSTICE) ANGER'S first show was at CHURCHILLS and I believe it was in 1992. Soon after starting to play some shows they played at Washington Square. I personally think this demo has a really raw sound. They always had that Carnivore-Agnostic Front Cross over sound. To me, ANGER brought a really violent style of Hardcore to South Florida.

This Demo was the first thing that they ever released (2004). DNME had members of Out of Spite, Brethren, Mindframe and the drummer Alex Del Bueno played in NY's District 9. This band was made up of a group of friends that shared the love of playing hardcore music, and this is how the band came together. DNME started around 1999/2000 and played their first show at the VANS Warped Tour in 2001. Members of this band consisted of Harold (Guitar/Vocals), Sapo (Guitar/Vocals) Alex (Drums) and Julian (Bass). Other former members of this band were Edwin Marquez, Javier, and Eric who lived in Miami at the time and played for H2O, Joe Shed and Bundy. DNME was a band that set themselves apart from other bands, mixing different styles of music. In certain songs Harold and Sapo used to take turns singing and playing Guitar. This Demo has 3 extra Live tracks that were recorded at Churchills and are not on the Original Demo. 2 of them are Covers by Dos Minutos and CRO MAGS.

La Vieja Guardia (L.V.G)

L.V.G recently broke up but luckily they released a Self Titled CD on I SCREAM Records. L.V.G was a 90's style hardcore band with a Spanish lyrical point of view of the Miami Cuban. Members of Burning Strong, DNME, MEHKAGO N.T. and SPEAK. They had that 90's "revival" sound but kept it pretty original. I personally think they were one of the best Miami Hardcore bands... Not only does my hair stick up every time I listen to them but seeing them live truly brought me back in time. This band was full of energy and nothing but heart.

This is the only release by this band… Wish I could have heard more.

Vessil Clothing: My Newest Endeavor

As if I didn't have enough on my plate with getting married, running Stuck in the Past and the South Florida blog, working and trying to get a new band off the ground, I along with my fiance, my cousin and my best friend have launched a clothing line called Vessil. This idea stemmed from our trip to Japan back in April when we saw numerous clothing lines and felt like we as a collective had something to bring to the table. We got to work and present to you 6 designs which will be our initial run.
Being the t shirt collector that I am and owning well over 800 band t shirts, some days I wake up and I just don't feel like wearing a band shirt. This helped shift the direction in which we are heading. I wanted something that was fun and simple but had nothing to do with music. My cousin, Erik Lopez aka Art Blur, has been a graphic designer for many years so having him do the design work has taken a huge weight off of our shoulders and given a new flavor to our idea.
Our initial launch will include 7 different designs and we will begin taking pre-orders shortly. For those days when you just feel like something different, try Vessil.

Culture - The Unreleased LP and EP

Growing up in South Florida, hardcore made a big shift in styles in the early 90s (this is before my time) heading in a much more metal direction. In my opinion, Strongarm was one band who helped shaped this new direction and Culture was the other. I really feel like Culture was a very important and influential band on the 90s hardcore band, especially in Europe. Many of the early releases on Goodlife Recordings were heavily influenced by both Culture and Morning Again. Culture in their band lifetime released a decent amount of records but, as most bands do, they recorded songs that never were released. I've been sitting on these recordings for a year and a half before having the go ahead to release them. I got them from John who allowed me to rip them from the tape and have Justin clean them up. He told me later that if Damien and Rich were okay with it, I could post them. So Justin cleaned them up, mastered them and did an overall great job making them sound great. He also made covers for them as there was no cover art originally. I want to specifiy that this is NOT the re-recorded Born Of You record (aka Mike Warden Can Suck It) that we posted some months back. This hasn't been heard by anyone outside the band since 1994. The LP was recorded in late 1994 or early 1995 right after Damien and John joined the band and features the now classic lineup of John and Rich on guitar, Damien on vocals, Gordon in bass and Josh on drums. Some of these songs were dropped and never re-recorded so this is your only chance to hear them. The second recording is an EP featuring alternate versions of Deforestation and Memento Mori as well as 2 songs that neither Rich nor Mark knew the titles to. This lineup featured John and Rich on guitar, Mark on vocals, Gordon on bass and Josh on drums.

Ok. I am gonna just try and wing this with no mistakes. Ha. I'll keep it brief but not to short.

It was the middle of the night somewhere on I95 headed back from Richmond, VA when it hit me. I needed to start a band. Something new and uninfluenced by the sounds of the times. I think the year was probably 1994 or so. I'm not exactly sure. I had moved to Richmond, Va with a friend of mine at the time. I was lucky enough to get to play bass for Grip later know as Dayspring. It was my first real taste of band life. Getting in a van and driving from state to state. I was so hooked. I had never felt such freedom. I was headed back to South Florida. I knew I needed to find some serious dudes to get in this band with me. I didnt know what it was gonna sound like or anything. I just knew I needed some down mother fuckers to set it off. Mark Mitchell has been a friend mine before I left for Richmond. Some of you may know him from Red Roses For A Blue Lady and now he plays bass for Throwdown I think. I wanted him to sing. He had a drummer named Josh Williams. We got back and we wasted no time. We set up shop in Mark's garage and just started playing. We wrote a couple of songs. They sucked. Ha. One day we got together for a practice. I started this riff. Not sure where it came from. Everyone sort of looked at each other with this intense excitement. I played it again and again. Then we started to add to it. Before you knew it we had a song. That song later became Born Of You and Culture was born.

We wrote I think maybe four songs and it was our plan to go record with the now famous Jeremy Staska. Side note... I feel like bands such as Culture and Morning Again helped start what was a wave of hardcore bands to record with Jeremy. He was a solid dude no doubt. Anyways... we wrote some songs and I was just gonna play both guitar tracks and play bass. No big deal. Well Mark decided that he didn't want to pay to record. Needless to say he was out and I ended up singing, playing both guitar tracks and playing bass. To this day I still think the demo was the best thing Culture ever did. Not because I did almost everything on it but because it was the purest form of the band. No outside influence. Just two guys in a garage. So now came the task of finding another guitar player and a bass player. Josh knew a kid named Gordon Tarpley, a sweet surfer beach dude with sweet surfer beach dude dreads. He ended up playing bass. Now to this day I'm still not sure how we found John Wylie to play guitar. I'm not sure if he was a friend of a friend or if later on when we got Damien Moyal that he knew him. I just don't remember. Sorry John. Ha. So after a lot of fill ins and flakes the line up was myself, John Wylie, Damien Moyal, Gordon Tarpley and Josh Williams.

Its important to note that I am sure I am leaving out some details and sort of jumping around but we are talking almost 16 years ago so bear with me. I'm not trying to give you a date by date narrative of the band. Just some basic facts those who are interested may not know.

Okay so now we know the basic formation of the original core members of Culture. I'll never forget our first show. We opened for Sick Of It All and Strife somewhere in Coconut Grove (almost positive this show was at the Kitchen Club in the Grove-Chip). I was so F'n nervous but so ready. We had written I think like seven songs. We really had no idea what we were doing but it was the most fun I had ever had playing a show to this date. Yeah I've played tons of other shows since then but damn that shit was tight. After we played some more shows things started to take off for us. We put a full length out on Conquer The World Records, did a lot of weekend touring. I mean we had no idea how to book a tour or any of that so we just did weekend shows. I knew enough people that we got on some good shows. We were huge in Indianapolis and Chicago. Ha Ha Ha. We then recorded the Deforestation 7" for Catalyst. Somehow Mark got back in the band for a while. John left to start Morning Again. Damien started singing for them then wasn't anymore. He started to do As Friends Rust and Bird Of ill Omen. Well one weekend tour with Mark and we all but begged Damien to come back. We got Steve Looker to take Johns place on guitar.

This is getting exhausting.

So now comes the Goodlife Recordings era. Ha. We recorded a split release with a band called Kindred from Europe. Then we put out a mini cd called Heteronome (ask Damien what the hell that means). We ended up touring Europe and to me that really was the downfall of the band. We were fighting all the time. It didn't matter what it was about. It got to the point where it was no longer fun for me. I loved Europe but hated being there with them. We played so many amazing shows and met so many amazing people but I knew I was done. The band wanted me out to I think. I mean we were a pack of Chiefs with no Indians to rule so eventually one person was gonna be the focus. That was me. I also was a dick so I made it easy for them. When we got home I went to Ohio to visit. They kicked me out while I was gone. It hurt. I mean I was the last original member. Culture was my life for so long that I felt like I had nothing. Eventually that feeling went away and I moved on to other bands. Culture, in many forms, continued on for a bit longer. They re-released the original Conquer The World recording on Goodlife which was cool. All and all I have a lot of good memories. I learned a lot of things about music and the business side as well as things about myself personally. Culture was one of the most important Vegan Straight Edge bands ever. Hands down. We, along with a few others, created a sound that was copied all over the globe. People named bands after our songs. Clothing companies from our lyrics. We influenced a scene. That scene gave me life long memories. I am forever grateful. I miss playing with those guys. I miss the shitty smelly practice spaces. I miss the excitement of writing new songs with them. I want to thank John, Damien, Gordon, Josh, Mark, Jason Dooley, Steve Looker and everyone that ever helped or supported the band. It still means a lot.

So its been a while...yeah I know and acknowledge that. Its been harder and harder to track down music and such since many people are not being as helpful as Id liked or hoped so Im doing what I can. I just added an old Churchills comp as well as the 2 7 inches from the Holy Terrors and a live set so check those out. Im going to make a more conscious effort to update this regularly again, though the content may not be as comprehensive as Im getting to bands I really dont know much about. Keepsake was one the bands doing the emo-core screamo thing in the late 90s and began to attract a pretty big following. They released a full length on Eulogy Recordings and began to tour nonstop. Their sound shifted after their first record on Eulogy and the band went more towards a pop sound with less screaming. While I was in Tampa for a show a few weeks ago, Jesse (drums) told me he had a few songs that they recorded before they broke up and I gotta say they really are damn good. I was never a big fan but these songs make me want to revist their old catalog. Its a shame that the band never released these songs but now you can hear the direction the band was going towards.

This was a 12 inch single that was released on Space Cadet Records in 1996 I believe. 3 songs and a handmade cover.

Ed Matus' Struggle started with Juan Montoya on guitar, Carl Ferrari on bass, and Robert Lecusay on drums in early 1994. They recorded a self-titled debut on Space Cadette records shortly after adding Scott Nixon on vocals and guitar.

Carl left in 1997 to pursue other musical interests, including his band Swivel Stick. A cadre of bass players followed, and eventually they decided to stay a 3 piece with Scott moving to bass permanently in 2000. After recording a split 7" with Floor, Entomological Discoveries with Sound and Vibration, they recorded a four song EP entitled Planes That Cast a Gloom.

Shortly thereafter they released a song on the Emo Diaries Vol. 4 entitled Distance. Another song, Hovering, was released on the Eagle has Landed compilation for Tranquility Base. Steve Brooks joined on guitar in 2000 and the band took a turn towards a heavier style of music. Ed Matus' Struggle broke up while recording songs for another full-length in 2002. Several songs were completed (or nearly completed, e.g., Hialeah and Teen Beatdown), but have never been released.

Hello faithful. I apologize for the delay in updating but school has been hectic and I was down in Miami this past week. Today's update brings us 32forty. These guys really loved Jawbreaker and it shows on their releases. A great blend of clean sung vocals and pop guitar parts but still keeping that punk edge. Omar, the bass player, is going to write up a full bio for me but until then enjoy their EP and full length. The last track on the EP is them going around and talking to friends about the band in fast forward. Pretty funny stuff...they band also recorded a cover of the Jawbreakers' "Do You Still Hate Me", which Im waiting to get off the band. When I do, Ill post it.

Brandon Holding Benefit Show, March 11 at GOO in Miami

In case you missed the post last month, Brandon Holding passed away last month after an 8 month battle with Leukemia. Next Wednesday, March 11, South Florida is coming together to honor his memory and raise money for his family. The show has a great lineup and is the first show for All Hell Breaks Loose in over a year. Also, A Jealousy Issue is playing for the first time in an incredibly long time so come out, help support, and be a united scene to honor the memory of Brandon Holding. Sorry for the lack of update yesterday but this week is hectic with school so Im doing the best I can. Also I didnt realize it but last week was the 1 year anniversary of the South Florida Music Scene blog. Time just flew by...I cant believe Ive been doing it for a year. It started me wanting to track down rare recordings from old South Florida bands and its turned into this, this which consumes my life when I go down to Miami for a visit. Im glad that so many of you still check regularly and leave comments and I will try to continue doing what Im doing. Just bear with me as school is brutal this semester. Glasseater recorded this track, a cover of Weezer's song "Holiday", for a compilation called "Rock Music: A Tribute To Weezer" on Dead Droid Records. This has Jason on vocals and still features the classic lineup up from their first 2 records. Glasseater put their own spin on the song and I think it holds up pretty well.

Also, a little tidbit of info about this compilation: Miami straight edge band Destro was originally slated to be on this comp as well. They recorded a cover of "Suzanne" from the Mallrats soundtrack which was drastically different from the original. The compilation was delayed numerous times so the band decided to include the track as a hidden track on their full length "The Accuracy of Broken Whispers". The owner of Dead Droid records found out, blew up about the situation, and kicked the band off the compilation replacing them with Midtown who did the same song. If you wanna hear their version, its about 30 seconds after the song "Jettison" on the full length. You can check it out here:

Okay so Im not even gonna pretend like I know a lot about Chocolate Grasshopper. I know the name from way back but thats where my knowledge ends. If anyone out there has any info, please pass it along so I can give this band a proper post. The music is fast with some melodic parts...definately good stuff. Did they release anything else? Again I have no clue...Ill see what I can do about finding more info but until then heres Chocolate Grasshopper.

Thankfully both Aesop and George Van Orsdel saw my post and helped piece some of the info together for me. Aesop said the band started before the year I thought which helped since he moved out of South Florida in 1988. George had this to say:

"Aesop is correct, this was Andre's pre-Quit band. Chocolate Grasshopper was around during the mid-eighties, I'd venture to say 1985-87, give or take, and the band consisted of Brent Wilson on guitar and vocals, Andre Serafini on drums, Ray (whose last name escapes me) on guitar and vocals, and Mike (whose last name again I can't remember) on bass. Brent and Ray would alternate on vocals as well as share backing vocal duties. As for the origin of the band, I honestly don't know, since they were already established when I became friends with them. In their own words, as written on their demo cassette, Chocolate Grasshopper were not "punkers, skins, gothic, progressives, rich little brats like the rest of miami, cool, mean, macho, fags, capitalists, commies, nazis, addicts, bros or vegetarians". Of course none of this was meant as slurs or insults to anyone, it was merely written sarcastically, due to constant rumors and the usual "shit-talking" that goes on within a scene. Chocolate Grasshopper was indeed one of the more popular bands at the time, therefore attracting the usual jealousy from other bands, which in turn sparks negative rumors. But I can vouch for them in saying that not only were Chocolate Grasshopper one of the most talented Miami bands in their day, but they were great guys, very cool and lots of fun to be around, in fact Brent and I went on to be great friends. They were very popular with the skateboarding crowd, as well as the punk crowd, but they were loved by all. My old band, Not Dead Yet, had the pleasure of playing many shows together with Chocolate Grasshopper. In my personal opinion, Chocolate Grasshopper was, and still remains, one of the great Miami punk bands of all time.
After the band broke up, Brent went on to play in Not Dead Yet, and then eventually moved to Gainesville where he started one of my all-time favorite Florida bands, RADON. Andre of course went on to play drums in QUIT. I occasionally run into Ray at local shows, I know he's played with Jesse from FWA in several projects, at the moment I don't know if he's involved in any music projects or not. I haven't heard from Mike since after Chocolate Grasshopper broke up. Brent now lives in Colorado and Andre went on to start his own live sound company in south Florida called Beach Sound. Ray still lives in Miami to the best of my knowledge and Mike is M.I.A. I have live footage of Chocolate Grasshopper playing one of their many shows at the Cameo Theater. I will try posting some footage up on youtube, I'll keep you posted."

Brandon Holding who was a regular at South Florida shows passed away on Wednesday night after an 8 month battle with Leukemia. I don't know all the details but there is going to be a memorial/benefit show in the next month or so to help out his family. Brandon you are in our hearts and thoughts, may your soul rest in peace.

I checked out the band and enjoyed their music...real good rock n roll in the vein of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers (in my opinion) and 70s rock. Check it out...heres what the label had to say:

"CELL 63 was formed in 1992 by Rob Coe (singer/guitarist), George Graquitena (drums), William Trev (bass) and David O. (guitar). Rob Coe had just come off the heels of his former band The NAUGHTY PURITANS (where he went by the stage name of Johnny Dallas), and George had previously played locally with bands such as JOBBERNOWL and The F-BOYZ.
CELL 63 had a very distinct sound, but was very reminiscent of the Minneapolis sound of the eighties, with such bands as The Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, as well as Florida artists Charlie Pickett and the Psycho Daisies,among many others. The band started playing locally in the Miami area, starting with their first show at Uncle Sam's Musicafe on South Beach. They immediately became a staple in the Miami local music scene, and soon after began working on their first self-titled debut CD "CELL 63".
The band quickly gained fans and recognition, from citations in "South Florida Magazine" (for best local artists) to articles in The New Times. The band was also featured on 2 local cd compilations, the Churchill's Hideaway CD "Music Generated by Geographical Confusion and Beer", and the Washington Square comp CD "Live At The Square II", as well as being a featured band at the 'Miami Rocks II" live music conference.
In 1993, William Trev quit the band to join the Holy Terrors and Cell 63 was found with having to find a replacement. After numerous bass players, the band finally found one, Peter Tassler from local Miami band The Shruggs.
The band started branching out of Miami, playing shows around the state, and opening up for such national acts as Reverend Horton Heat, The Genitorturers, The Nixons and many others.
In 1994, the band decided to record their second cd, "Once Upon A Drunk...". During recording however, Peter left the band and was replaced by Matt Peters, who formally played drums for Melbourne band The SCOOBIE DOOS. "Once Upon A Drunk...", which was released later that year, received great reviews, locally and nationally, garnering the band an excellent write-up in CMJ magazine as well as other publications, and offering them the opportunity to be featured on a 30 minute South Florida TV show called "MUSIC X".
The band eventually broke up in 1995, shortly after their U.S. East Coast tour, citing musical and personal differences. They all went their separate ways, except for Rob and George, who went on to form FAY WRAY with Tony Roche (bassist for local Miami band QUIT) and singer Jeff London, who lived in Gainesville.
Rob Coe is currently the mastermind behind the band The ENABLERS, and George is the vocalist for South Florida psychobilly band The VAN ORSDELS. Matt Peters moved back to Melbourne, FL and now owns his own asphalt paving company. David O. settled down to the family life."

In 2000, Too Damn Hype Records released a compilation called "Disintegrated" which was a tribute to the Cure. All the bands featured covered songs from the album "Disintegration" (for some reason, no one covered Lovesong) including Cave In, Converge, Bad Luck 13, Voice of Reason. The label went under, this record kinda got lost in the shuffle and has been out of print since about 2001. South Florida's Where Fear and Weapons Meet covered "Closedown" and it was definitely interesting. Nice to see them try to do something different and make the song their own but also keep their style. Anyway, enjoy what I think is the last Where Fear and Weapons Meet song to be unearthed.

Denny's Unit - Unreleased Demo

I was really hoping Id find some kind of info on Denny's Unit to post but I couldnt find anything. Real good punk rock from Miami that later featured Mike Marsh from the Agency and Dashboard Confessional on drums as well as Lori, the future Mrs. Marsh, on bass. If anyone has photos or more info to add, pass it along and Ill get it posted. I don't know what else the band recorded, but this demo was apparently unreleased so I dont have the track names but the quality is real good. Check it out

The Man, George Van Orsdel, dropped this info for us regarding the band

"The Denny's Unit demo was recorded around 1997-1998 (I could be mistaken with the year), at Tapeworm studios in Miami, with Jeremy DuBois. I played drums on these demo recordings. I also have a live recording from a show at Cheers (I need to transfer it to MP3). I have the song titles somewhere but I can't find them, I'll do my best to find them for ya. The singer/guitarist, Patti Gran, eventually moved out of state and played in a band called New Black and currently plays in a band called The Dials. Mike Marsh took over on drums after I stopped playing with the band. I don't know if they recorded anything after that. As for any photos, I don't have any and I don't know if any exist."

I received an email from the band who asked that I take down the link. The demo was never meant to be released and I apologize to them for having it up. They said they would send me pictures to post so be on the look out for that

Arguably, Florida's first punk band. While The Eat was the first punk band in South Florida, Roach Motel was the first punk band in Florida. George Tabb would later go on to start the band Furious George.

"Roach Motel were one of the earliest and best-known hardcore bands from Florida. Here's their debut 7" Roach & Roll from 1982. Sure this record has some jabs at Cubans, old people and homosexuals and the infamous track "Wetback," but back in '82 punk wasn't overrun with PC watchdogs, and this kind of naive bigotry was just part of a bigger misanthropy. Not that I am condoning such sentiments, it was just how it was back in the day, and I am against any kind of revisionism of the past to conform with people's tight-assed worldview in the present. Either way, this is a classic of American punk and a very important piece of my growing up punk in Florida. These guys were the kings, this record is the proof."

George Van Orsdel comes through huge!!!

George Van Orsdel, the singer of the Van Orsdels (among many others in the past), was nice enough to send me a disc with loads of bands from South Florida's past as a contribution to documenting this great scene we love so dearly. Huge thanks to him for sending that out of the kindness of his heart without asking for money to cover postage and shipping (which I gladly would have paid). Expect some real gems from South Florida's past real soon...he also included this picture of the Cameo Theater marquee being prepared for a Dead Boys show in 1986. Again, George thanks so much for all your help and contributions...expect a full interview with George in the near future.

403 Chaos - Florida Fucking Hardcore

This is a killer comp put out in the late 90s by Schematics Records, Steve Heritage of Assuck fame's label. Basically a compilation of bands that had played at the legendary club in Tampa, 403 Chaos. This comp is about 10 years old now and shows a great variety of bands from Florida including the mighty Jud Jud. While I could go on, Mr. Andrew "Boxcar Records" Chadwick gave a great description in Ink 19.

I started class this week so things have been a little hectic between getting back into the mode of school and taking 6 classes in order to graduate this spring. Ive been in class today since 930 and wont be done til 5, then I have a show to play tonight followed by studying and trying to watch the end of the BCS football game. Ill have my regular update tomorrow instead of today and I promise its gonna be a good one. Upcoming I have new interviews that Im just waiting to get back including one with the legendary Metal Wolf from Stick Shift Lover. 2 Live Crew

Alright something a little different. While not a part of the South Florida Scene that this blog has been documenting, 2 Live Crew was at the forefront of the Miami Bass scene in South Florida in the late 80s and early 90s and a very important part of South Florida Music Scene history. The music is still great and while Luther "Luke Skyywalker" Campbell has gone on to his solo work, the original members of Brother Marquis and Fresh Kid Ice, still push forward.

From their entry on Wikipedia:

"2 Live Crew was created by David "Treach DJ Mr. Mixx" Hobbs in Riverside, California, with fellow rappers Chris (Fresh Kid Ice) Wongwon, and Yuri (Amazing Vee) Vielot. The 3 met at March AFB Riverside, CA, as they were enlisted in the Air Force. Along with giving local parties on and off base, they recorded their first singles through Macola Records Distribution in Los Angeles, CA. They released "Revelation" in 1984; the single sold well in Florida, encouraging the group to release What I Like. In 1986, due to the popularity of the new single Throw the D**k, the group, including new member Mark "Brother Marquis" Ross replacing Amazing Vee due to military commitments, relocated to Miami and teamed up with Ghetto Style DJ's and soon to be manager and eventual performer Luther Campbell, who used the nickname "Luke Skyywalker" (and was subsequently sued by George Lucas).
Throw The Dick, with its fast dance tempo, turntable scratching explicit phrases from comedy albums, stuttering voice samples, and the Roland TR-808 drum machine brought a new sound to the group, penned as The Miami Bass Sound. David "Treach DJ Mr. Mixx" Hobbs was credited with the production.
The year 1987 saw the release of The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are, featuring profane and sexually graphic lyrics. Rudy Ray Moore's comedy albums and other XXX assorted comedy albums provided the material for most of the explicit samples that "Mr. Mixx" used. The album was produced by Mr. Mixx. Bob Rosenberg of Will to Power did trick edits on Beat Box and was billed "King of the Edits". The record went gold. Though the controversy did not rise to the levels the group would reach in the future, a Florida store clerk was charged and acquitted of felony charges for selling the album to a fourteen-year-old girl in 1987.
Campbell decided to sell a separate clean version in addition to the explicit version of the next album, Move Somethin' (1988), produced by Mr. Mixx. A record store clerk in Alexander City, Alabama was cited for selling a copy to an undercover police officer in 1988. It was the first time in the United States that a record store owner was held liable for obscenity over music. The charges were dropped after a jury found the record store not guilty.
As Nasty As They Wanna Be (1989) became the group's biggest hit, largely because of the single "Me So Horny", which was popular in spite of little radio rotation, thanks, in part, to prevalent play on MTV. The song was based on a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and took a sample from Mass Production's Firecracker. This album was also produced by Mr. Mixx.
The American Family Association did not think the presence of a "Parental Advisory" sticker was enough to adequately warn listeners of what was inside the case. Jack Thompson, a lawyer affiliated with the AFA, met with Florida Governor Bob Martinez and convinced him to look into the album to see if it met the legal classification of obscene. In 1990 action was taken at the local level and Nick Navarro, Broward County sheriff received a ruling from Judge Mel Grossman that probable cause for obscenity violations existed.^[2] Navarro warned record store owners that selling the album may be prosecutable. 2 Live Crew filed a suit against Navarro. That June, Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled against the album, declaring it obscene and illegal to sell. Charles Freeman, a local retailer, was arrested two days later, after selling a copy to an undercover police officer. This was followed by the arrest of three members of 2 Live Crew after they performed some material from the album at a live performance. They were acquitted soon after. In 1992, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit overturned the obscenity ruling from Jose Gonzales, and the Supreme Court of the United States refused to hear Broward County's appeal. A notable feature of the case was the distinguished literary critic and now Harvard University professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. as an expert witness on behalf of the defendants. He argued that the material that the county alleged was profane, actually had important roots in African-American vernacular, games, and literary traditions and should be protected.
As a result of the controversy, As Nasty As They Wanna Be sold over two million copies. It peaked at #29 on The Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A few other retailers were later arrested for selling it as well. Later heavy metal band Van Halen sued over an uncleared sample of their song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" in the 2 Live Crew Song "The Fuck Shop". The publicity then continued when George Lucas, owner of the Star Wars universe, successfully sued Campbell for appropriating the name "Skywalker" for his record label, Luke Skyywalker Records. Campbell changed his stage name to Luke (and changed the record label's name to Luke Records) and then released an extremely political solo album, Banned in the USA after obtaining permission to use an interpolation of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. 2 Live Crew paraphernalia with the Luke Skywalker or Skywalker logos are usually sought after as collector's items.
In 1991, 2 Live Crew released the very first live rap album, Live in Concert, and Sports Weekend, a full-length studio original. It peaked at #22 on The Billboard 200 and #19 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It did not gain the same sales level that they experienced with As Nasty As They Wanna Be. The 2 Live Crew members went their separate ways after this. Luke pursued his solo music career and other projects.
In 1992, Fresh Kid Ice released unreleased tracks from pre-Luke 2 Live Crew Deal With This under the name Rock on Crew, while Luke and Ice also released new solo albums, I Got Shit on My Mind and The Chinaman, respectively.
Mark "Brother Marquis" Ross co-starred alongside Fred Williamson in the film South Beach and started a new group with Aldrin "DJ Toomp" Davis, a former member of Poison Clan, which was also signed to Campbell's label. They named the group 2 Nazty, and released the album "Indecent Exposure" on Attitude Records in 1993. The single was called "Can't Say I Love You," but it did not chart, and the group never released a second album. The single was a departure from the typical 2 Live nasty rhymes, and focuses on what a deep emotion love is, and how it should not be said to anyone lightly. The rest of the album sounds like a 2 Live Crew record, and focuses on sexual exploits of the members.
The hard feelings over the split of the 2 Live Crew is apparent on the album, as Marquis is heard on the track "Interview" saying he was fired from the group, and that the other members had no love for him. DJ Toomp also has a line in "Be My Bitch" comparing signing a deal with Skyywalker Records to signing your life away.
1994 saw Luke, Fresh Kid Ice and a new addition to the group, Verb, regrouping as The New 2 Live Crew, issuing Back at Your Ass for the Nine-4. This album peaked at #52 on The Billboard 200 and #9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The New 2 Live Crew broke up in 1995.
Luke, Fresh Kid Ice, Brother Marquis and Mr. Mixx re-formed again to record "Hoochie Mama" for the soundtrack to the movie Friday. Plans to reunite for an album were short-lived, as Fresh Kid Ice, Mr. Mixx, and Brother Marquis left Luke and Luke Records to go to Lil' Joe Records and released Shake a Lil' Somethin' (1996). This album was their last album to make the Billboard 200, peaking at #145. It peaked at #33 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Mr. Mixx left soon after, leaving Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis to record The Real One in 1998. It peaked at #59 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 1998, Brother Marquis became a born-again Christian, quit the group, and began devoting himself to combating what he sees as the "evils" that he as a member of 2 Live Crew portrayed and glorified. His born again status/views on music changed back to his roots in 2006 when he worked with music producers Dylan Berry and Noah Lifschey of Hollowstone Muisic under in the LA rock/rap group called the Shake Joint and released a solo album in 2008 that contained explicit lyrics.2 Live Crew performed at the 2005 Gathering of the Juggalos.
In late 2007, 2 Live Crew announced on their MySpace page that Brother Marquis and Fresh Kid Ice will be releasing an album sometime in 2008. The album, tentatively named Just wanna be heard, is currently scheduled for release in the spring of 2009."

Far Out Records - South Florida Compilation

Far Out Records was a record store turned label run by future AAA horn player Tim Far Out. From about 1993 - 1997, Far Out could do no wrong and continuously put out great punk records. To be honest I dont know what happened to Tim and the label so if anyone has any info they'd like to pass on, Id love to hear it.

"Tim shut down the store i think in 1994-1995 due to lack of business and the area it was in. It was in the ghetto of Ft. Lauderdale (Sunrise To Be Exact). He Was on one end of the courtyard and The Mudhouse cafe was on the other which was a vegan cafe & infoshop. The building has since been condemned but the inside has never been touched. you can still look thru the windows and see old flyers and skate decks on the wall. Tim had a myspace page but not sure what happened to it. Tim & Lisa got married, have two kids and still lived in the Miami area as of 2007."

This compilation came out in 1994 I believe and had a great variety of bands from South Florida including The Crumbs, Against All Authority, Gus, Hudson, and even included a few hardcore bands such as Tension, Culture, and The Murrychesstoes featuring Shai Hulud's Matt Fox. I got this in the mail yesterday from my friend Steve who was gracious enough to sell it to me. Thanks to him for all his contributions thus far...this record was hand screened and the labels of the record were all handwritten. I was unable to scan the covers so I had to take pictures with a digital camera so if it doesnt look amazing, I apologize. I was able to to scan the inserts which includes the addresses of the bands as well their current status at the time. Finally the back cover, includes a map of the state to show where each band is located. Great comp...one last bit, the quality isnt incredible because it sounds like the record was not mastered as a whole so some of the tracks may be a little louder then others. I did the best I could to clean it up so enjoy. Happy New Year, faithful.

Mindframe is the band that became Brethren. I never got to see them except for a reunion show but this demo still holds up some 15-16 years later. Great recording by the way especially at the time. Also this recording features the late Alex DelBueno (RIP) as well as Flaco (JG) and Julian from Brethren. Great heavy hardcore in the vein of Madball. You can almost hear the cry of Hialeah in the background.
Members went on to and were in DNME, Straight Youth, and Brethren.

Glasseater chose to re-release their first record "Miles Ahead of Where We Left Off" with Dead Droid Records and put 2 additional tracks on this release. Interview with Andy Malchiodi (ex-Caught Inside)

Ive been friends with Andy for about 12 years. While I dont see him as often as I used to I still consider him a very dear friend and I was happy that he took the time to do the interview for us.

First off introduce yourself and what bands you have been in.

My name is Andy Malchiodi. Aka Andy Treehorn. I’ve pretty much only been in 3 bands. The first band I was ever in was called Forehead. That pretty much morphed into Caught Inside. And I was in a band for a while in California called Forget the Jones.

When did you first start attending shows?

My first “show” was Primus and the Melvins at the edge in Ft. Lauderdale in 1993. Prior to that, I had seen Guns n’Roses at what was then Joe Robbie stadium. I saw Metallica the following year at the Miami arena. I started going to shows regularly in 1994.

What bands were you into when you started going to shows?

I got introduced to a lot of bands via surf videos. Bad Religion, Black Flag, NOFX, Pennywise. At the same time, my cousin was introducing me to Inside Out, Rage Against the machine, Youth of Today, and Sick of it All. So from the get go, I was exposed to different sub-genres of punk, and I’ve always felt fortunate in that sense. I enjoy all of it, and from there I just connected the dots, taking in everything from gorilla biscuits to operation ivy.

What do you feel your biggest accomplishment was as far as the South Florida scene goes?

That’s a good question. I suppose it would be just helping to inspire our peers and making a valuable contribution to punk rock in south florida at the time. It’s hard to say that we “did this” or “did that.” I think anything we’re responsible for is a lot more intangible. Our drummer Shane told me of a story a few years ago when someone recognized him and said that Caught Inside had changed his life. That’s pretty amazing to me. If there are others out there who would say we even had an impact on their lives, I’d be proud of that. That’s a pretty big accomplishment.

Can you remember anything specific that made South Florida different from other music scenes?

The diversity. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in such a mulit-cultural, ethnically diverse city. That was definitely reflected in our scenes. Beyond that, it wasn’t unusual to see hardcore kids at a ska show, or punk kids at a subliminal criminal show, etc. I don’t know that its real common to see those things in a lot of places.

Can you tell us a story or something memorable that you remember from your time attending shows in South Florida?

I booked a show for the ataris at Fantasy land in cutler ridge. The booking agent looked at whitepages.com or something and thought that fantasy land was some kind of day care facility. He called me all freaked out, thinking I was booking the ataris at an after school center. I said, “oh no, don’t worry, it’s a big warehouse in cutler ridge.” As it was coming out of my mouth, I realized it didn’t sound all that much better, haha. Anyway, this was long after cheers had closed and most of the all-ages shows had been taking place outside of Miami proper. I gave this rousing speech during our set about why I booked the show at this particular spot, which was in deeeep south Miami. I got a little carried away and said something to the effect of “the south will rise again!” It was very well received, but I laughed to myself wondering how that might be misinterpreted.

How old were you when Caught Inside started?

16, almost half a lifetime ago, haha.

You guys did a record on Evil Ash right?

Yep, our second 7-inch, “Siegel for President” came out on Evil Ash Records, which was operated by my cousin, Manny Malchiodi.

I liked that you guys would always did hardcore covers. I remember at a house party you covering Gorilla Biscuits and Twisted Sister. Was the crowd pretty diverse when you would play or was it mainly punk kids?

We strived for diversity, but I think more than anything, it was just our friends, hahaha.

Eventually you guys signed to Drive Thru Records and then broke up. What happened?

This question could be an interview unto itself. Long story short, we spent a month recording the album, they didn’t like it, they weren’t gonna put it out. There was talk of them helping to shop it to other labels, but that never happened. We were essentially dropped from the label, so we tried shopping the completed album around ourselves. The response was really positive, but no one wanted to do business with drive thru. Drive thru had earned themselves a shady, untrustworthy reputation, and no one wanted to touch them with a 10 foot pole. We were without a guitar player (again), living 4 hours apart, and in a lot of debt. Some of us had a lot of personal stuff to deal with and some of us wanted to finish school if we weren’t gonna be on tour full time, which had previously been the plan. The whole ordeal really took the wind out of our sails, and it was tough finding any motivation to continue. The three of us decided it was best to let it go at that point.

It’s a bum out because the material you guys did for them I felt was your strongest.

Many, including myself, would agree. This made it all the more frustrating. We were signed to the label based on old material. We write and record new, better material, and its like “ehh, we’re not really into it.”

At what point did you move out to California?

I moved to California in October of 2001. Caught Inside had broken up and I had graduated from college at the same time in December of 2000. So it was time to move on out.

Are you currently working on musical projects?

Not really. I tried to start a new band early in the summer, but I found I just didn’t have the time it would have taken to get it off the ground. I play my acoustic guitar a lot if that counts. I play lagwagon songs for friends I have out here. They have no idea what I’m talking about.

Tell me about Drunky The Bear

Drunky the Bear is a character conceived by a friend of mine, TC. In the beginning, I kind of assumed the marketing of drunky the bear. We shot funny sketches and we eventually made 2 pornos revolving around drunky the bear. It’s not as weird as it sounds, but almost. Only the first one got released. All of the second one, minus the sex, made its way into my DVD “Counterparts,” which is collection of stunts, pranks, short films, etc. In the meantime, TC, as drunky the bear, found a slot on the “monsters in the morning” radio show in Orlando. He’s been doing that for years now and is doing really well. You can order “counterparts” at drunkythebear.com.

Until The End - The Unreleased Track featuring The Metal Wolf

Id like to preface this story, courtesy of Dan Mazin, by saying it is 100% true and in no way fabricated. This is the last unreleased Until The End song...

" It was a wet, dank night in Fort Lauderdale-typical. Until The End was
at the famed Studio 13 with Jeremy Staska recording our swan song,
"The Blind Leading the Lost." The recording process was difficult.
Technical problems on our end, a singer with a busted throat, and the
rotten weather combined to put us all on edge. We were listening to
some rough vocal mixes in the booth when we heard the first door slam
open. We all sat at attention...then came the sound of the main door
flying open. In the doorway was the most disgusting, insane, and
sexually exuberant man I have ever laid eyes on.

The Wolf.

The Metal Fucking Wolf.

We were all instantly taken aback by the smell of marijuana, fried
chicken, and fresh sex. For as much as we were repelled, all of us
were immediately drawn to him-his aura was firing on all cylinders.
Behind him, 2 women of questionable moral character stumbled in. One
screamed for a "bump" while the other began licking the couch. The
Wolf threw himself on the now-wet spot and threw his legs akimbo.
While the 2 ladies "attended to his junk," The Wolf addressed us.

"Turn the fucking mic on faggots."

We all shuttered ourselves in the control room to try to figure out
what to do. Wylie had gone home so his Ninja skills were of no use to
us. Staska had to take his 'medicine' and was incapacitated for the
moment. (Besides, he's a lover not a fighter). James was text
messaging someone, hopefully the police, likely some broad. Chip was
curled in the corner in a puddle of his own urine. We hadn't even told
him about The Wolf yet, he just did this every night. That left me,
Dan, to take over the recording.

"OK Wolf, take one." I turned to ProTools and fired it up. "That's all
I need pussy, start the shit up, sit the fuck down and let a real man
get to work," he told me as he unbuttoned his shirt and zipped his
fly. I don't know where it came from but he then began to rub baby oil
all over his chest and belly-"...for later," he said. I threw up in my
mouth a little.

What followed was 3 minutes of the most vile, horrid, and raw vocals I
have ever heard. It was cacophonous. It was beautiful.

What you will soon hear was all done in one take. He even did his own
gang and back-up vocals. It was fucking insane. I have never been the
same since.

When he finished, he collected his women and threw each of them over a
shoulder so that their faces were directly in front of his now-exposed
ass cheeks. "Start eating" was the last thing I heard him say and he
stumbled out of the studio. I heard his motorcycle roar as he started
it up. I went outside to see which direction he went. I needed to
understand the feelings that had been drummed up inside of me. The
Wolf was still standing there. "I farted-go back inside and call me a
cab you fucking queer."

So I did.

I haven't seen or heard from The Wolf since. Some say he died, some
say he went to prison. Others say he lives under the bridge at Andrews
Ave. All are likely, but I know better. In bedrooms across America
where teenage boys sing along to Ratt, Poison, and Slaughter-the
spirit of The Wolf lives.

Interview with Dan Mazin (ex-Keepsake, Until The End, Eulogy Recordings)

Dan has been a good friend of mine for many years now and I thought it would be a great idea to hear about his time in the South Florida Music Scene. Dan is currently residing in Santa Cruz, California but still makes it back down from time to time. I received this last night and while I said I wouldnt have a post until after Thanksgiving, I wanted to get this up as it was a great read. Thanks Dan. (Oh and I dont know why the interview is all choppy and skips lines. Im trying to fix it).

First off introduce yourself and what bands you have been in.

Hello Chip, friend of mine for 10 years, allow me to introduce myself. To you.
My name is Dan Mazin and I played in the following musical groups:
Action Jackson (when I was 14), Keepsake (when they were screamo), One
Day Away (when they were metal), Until The End (when we were straight
edge), and for one evening I was in Red Roses for a Blue Lady.I still
haven't been able to wash that feeling off of my skin. Children still
scream at the sight of me.

When did you first start attending shows?

My first punk/metal shows were when I was maybe 12 or 13. I'm 18 now.
SPRING BREAK!
Anyway, the city of Coral Springs would put on these outdoor
shows-CHAOS. I saw some crazy shit there. Chad's old band Backscatter,
Amboogalard, Jack Off Jill. Seriously, what the fuck were my parents
thinking letting me go to that shit? "Hey Mom, after the Jack Off Jill
show, can we get ice cream?" I should call child services on
her...John McHale probably had pictures from CHAOS even though he was
too young to be there.
Anyway that led to shows at Cheers, Squeeze, The Edge, and the New
Moon Cafe (next to the Lauderhill Uncle Sam's). I think that was its
name. Someone help me out on that. I always had an ear for all styles
of music that sort of fell into the underground world: punk, metal,
indie, HC, goth, etc. South Florida always seemed to have a great mix
of it all.

What bands were you into when you started going to shows?

Like I said, I was all over the map. I really loved everything, and
for someone my age I was highly inquisitive. I remember buying my
first Pavement record in 5th grade. I also loved garage stuff like
Mudhoney-who after all of these years I am seeing for the first time
in December. When it came to local bands I really loved Notch Above
Kafka, Vacant Andys, Ed Matus' Struggle, etc.

What do you feel your biggest accomplishment was as far as the South
Florida scene goes?

Accomplishment? Who the fuck knows and I don't really care-that was
never important to me. I think we had a good, diverse scene and that's
what matters. What I'm most grateful for are the longstanding
friendships I have made and maintained over the years. I have people
that will be in my life forever thanks to the South Florida music
scene. There's one guy in particular that stands out above the rest. A
man of distinction and endless wisdom. Alex Leone, go get me a fucking
milkshake.

Can you remember anything specific that made South Florida different
from other music scenes?

We had a true mix of so many styles-that's not something you find
everywhere. I think Aryeh hit it on the head. I remember the first
EulogyFest had Until The End and Dashboard Confessional on the same
bill-and it made perfect sense. It allowed bands to develop their own
styles and be creative without fear of the rigid boundaries of other
scenes. It may not be as true today, but that's how it was when I was
involved. You couldn't have a band like Poison the Well come out of
any other scene. South Florida was truly unique.

Can you tell us a story or something memorable that you remember from
your time attending shows in South Florida?

I have tons and tons of memories, but nothing stands out in an epic
way. My time in the scene was more of a sprawling tale than an quick
explosion. Although, the time that a certain Hialeah gentleman beat up
Rob Keepsake's car was fucking hilarious. Not because he beat up Rob's
car, but because he wasn't intending to fuck with Rob but someone
else. It was equally funny and sad because Rob was a good guy. Sorry
buddy...Come to think of it, I have a lot of awesome stories but they
pretty much all revolve around riots and fights. I'll keep quiet so as
to not incriminate any of my friends.

When you joined Keepsake you were pretty young. How old were you when
the first record was released?

Paul, Mark, and myself started Keepsake when we were 15. After some
line up juggling, including the infamous singer trade with PTW that
sent Duane to the Well and Shane to the Sake, we recorded and released
the record when the 3 of us were 16. When I talk to people now, they
don't realize we were just kids. Especially out here on the west coast
where I now reside, I'll occasionally run into someone who was WAY
into that album. It's sort of creepy. We were just doing our best to
emulate the bands we loved. The Promise Ring and Sepultura were our
immediate influences. We were odd ducks-I think that's why it didn't
really sound like anything out there.

What caused you to quit?

Things got hairy on the INTERNETZZZZ OMG! A certain member's
girlfriend posted some lame stuff, racist stuff. I was 100% not cool
with it. I think I was also just burned out on the work involved. We
busted our asses in that band. We practiced constantly and we toured
as much as our little hearts could handle. That all combined in a way
that made it easy to walk away. Fortunately time is a great healer and
I'm friends with everyone from the band now, but it's a really heady
experience to be in a band at that age. A serious band I should add.
We have a Wikipedia entry!

After Keepsake you joined One Day Away. How did that come about?

The guys in One Day Away were all my buddies and they needed someone.
It was about a year or so after I left Keepsake, so I felt like it was
a good time to jump in. Those guys were great musicians, light years
beyond me. It really made me up my own game. My time with them was
short-only a few shows over 3-4 months, but it was fun.

How did Until the End come about?

UTE started when PTW came home from an east coast tour and Allan and
Chris got tapped by the straight edge fairy. Allan and I worked
together (at Blockbuster video, perhaps you have heard of it Chip) and
I had known John for a few years from the Keepsake record. We were
just bullshitting one day and decided to start it up. I think John had
enough time off since Morning Again split and the Weapon wasn't going
to be full time. Eulogy was starting to take off and I think he knew
he wasn't going to be in a full time band again. So John, Allan, and
myself got Chris PTW and my close friend Brendan Ekstrom who was in
200 North (later This Day Forward and now in Circa Survive). We wrote
songs quick and dirty. Brendan had to move away before we got started
playing shows, so we asked JC from Glasseater to play guitar and also
to help us meet our Hispanic guy quota. Wylie counts as 3 white
people, so we were way off balance for a South Florida band. We went
through a millions drummers, one Mark Mitchell, and a couple of other
strays. It was fun, the shows were always nuts, and hopefully people
had a good time watching us. The End.

Youre living in California now. Are you playing in any bands out west?

FUCK NO. I need a break for another few years. I have a full-time job
and that limits my spare time. I'm at no great loss for people to play
with-the Bay Area is full of great people-it just isn't something that
interests me at the moment. Maybe one day, I'm still a young man. A
young, spry boy.

What can you say about the Hellfest 2000 weekend?

1) Dipping a guy's hand in warm water while he is sleeping will NOT
make him wet himself. It will only make him splash water everywhere.
2) Syracuse, is it really "a Syracuse thing" to have large phallic sex
toys in your apartment-if you're a guy?
3) Doug, your apartment reeked of cat pee and I threw up in your trash can.
4) Everyone in Destro, I made a mess of the van in a very bad way. Deal with it.
5) Adrian is old, or so I hear.

Tell me about Bacon.

Bacon is a delicious food. It also the name of my cat. Rather than
subject readers to 3 pages of me going on about how amazing she is, I
will take this time to DEMAND that you adopt a pet-find your local
Humane Society or animal rescue. Also, please consider adopting an
older animal-kittens may be cute, but they are Nazis. Srsly.

You also worked for Eulogy for a number of years. What was your job at Eulogy?

I worked there for about 5 years. When I started we were working on a
card table in the corner of John's apartment. By the time I left we
had a palatial office in Fort Lauderdale. Anyway, my job changed over
the years as we were able to hire more people. When it was just John
and I, I was basically a gopher. I packed orders, answered emails,
listened to demos, spammed message boards, etc. When I left, I was
responsible for manufacturing. It wasn't glamorous, but it was a
learning experience for sure. I learned a lot of good habits that have
carried over well in my current professional life.

Dan thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Any closing words
or shout outs?

I love you all and I miss you. Sometimes life demands that you pick up
and move across the country. If you get that urge, go for it. It was
the greatest decision of my life.

"If memory serves me right, the Outrights existed from roughly 1994 - 2000. In that time, the Outrights released 2 full length CDs, a 7", and a couple of comp tracks on various south florida labels. We managed two US tours during high school, taking us to far-off lands like Chicago, which is about as far as Istanbul to a 16 year old kid from Florida.

We played locally at Cheers and Respectable Street and Club Q and Happy Daze, with local bands like the Schmendricks, Side Order, The Crumbs, Against All Authority, Hudson, Project Winston, the Vacant Andys, and A New Found Glory. Some idiot promoters also put us on stage with national acts like Guttermouth, MTX, The Beatnik Termites, Discount, and the Teen Idols.

We probably hit our peak at age 17, more-or-less living in a dirty warehouse in Pompano Beach where we drank far too much, watched Johnny swing from the rafters, and manged to write the second record.

Well it didn't seem like so long ago but... The Beltones got their start in 1994 when two drinking buddies in Fort Lauderdale decided to stop fucking around in other people's bands and make the kind of music they listened to while spilling shit on each other. They were both guitar players, so they had the easiest bandmates to find taken care of off the bat. Now they needed a rhythm section. Bill's girlfriend at the time had a little brother named Kevin. He couldn't play any instrument whatsoever, but he had a ton of heart and so much balls he needed a wheelbarrow to walk down the street. He got hold of a kit and began working on keeping a beat. Just one left, and by the suggestion of Chuck Loose, the boys picked up Chris Arocha, bass player for Class War and South Florida's premier punk photographer. He was the old man of the band but you wouldn't know it to listen to him talk about robots. He loved his robots so. Now that they had a band they went about banging out a couple songs and put out a demo tape entitled "Please god make them stop". If you've ever heard it you'll understand the title. This demo was so awful that it attracted the attention of Tim Pagones, who was looking for more terrible bands to be on his Fort Lauderdale record label, Far Out Records. The boys weren't sure if they were quite ready to be doing more than practicing, but the flashy world of the big time music industry proved all too tempting for these simple buffoons, and they dove head first into the debauchery we call rock and roll with their first record, the 4 song 7 incher "Lock and Load". This record was a huge regional hit.

At least in the region known as Bill's living room, where he played it 3 or 4 times before throwing it at his roommate222s cat. Word spread all the way to that hotbed of the record industry, South Carolina, and Just Add Water records put the Beltones on their follow-up to the extremely so-so compilation "Water Music" entitled "I Can't Believe It's Not Water". Pure genius. With the Beltones' help, this record far surpassed its predecessor's mediocrity, and quite frankly smelled like an open ass. Jason Duncan was so impressed with the boys he invited them do a single for his label. What followed was the unforgettably two-sided, paper-labeled "My Old Man" single, which had songs and lyrics and that shit. Somehow this cat named Mark Rainey, who was starting up a label in San Francisco with money he earned licking stamps for lepers at a slaughterhouse (I dunno, he said it was the truth), heard the boys' tunes and wanted to make sweet music with them. Bill thought he seemed kind of queer, but the other guys convinced him to go along with them and agree to make a record with this rube. Apparently they had maxed out their credit cards at Seminole bingo and figured they could pawn the hot tub that all TKO records bands receive upon being signed. Unfortunately for them they weren't "signed", and the Forgotten had used up all the Jacuzzis filming "Kid Vegas: The San Francisco Freak". They recorded a new 4 song EP called "Naming My Bullets", and redid the old songs and put it all on a CD only release called "On Deaf Ears". They went on tour with the Workin' Stiffs and the Truents and drank a little. Not too much, they're pro and shit. Then 3 of them moved to Gainesville after watching "University Co-eds vol. 12". Chris couldn't come along because he had a new wife and his rendering business was starting to take off in a big way. Strangers in a strange town, and without a bass player, the boys were rescued by a guy named Will Thomas. Will was a drummer, and hadn't played the bass, but was down for the cause and assured the boys he could pick it up, at least for a little while. It turned out he wasn't full of shit, and pulled it off quite well. Then the shit hit the fan. Keeping it in the family proved to be too much for the Beltones, and after a heated fight vaguely having something to do with the girl who was Kevin's sister and Bill's old lady, and a lot more to do with Bill's being an overbearing bastard, Kevin Crook left the band a month before a U.S. tour without a drummer. Actually it left them without a bass player. Will was an okay bass player, but he was (and is) a badass on the skins and shit. Naturally he slid to drums, and the hunt was on to find a guy to play bass who'd be willing to spend a month in a van with the ugliest men in show business. The man to fill those shoes was James Ross, and everything was set. He was the only guy who got laid on tour. James quit the band shortly after to take karate lessons or something, and the boys got their buddy Mike Moody to jump onboard. This story with be continued shortly.......

Ive had a lot of personal stuff going on this past few days which is the reason for not having a post today. Expect an update tomorrow...also Ill be adding interviews with John Wylie (Morning Again, Eulogy Recordings), Dan Mazin (Until the End), Jason Lederman (Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Machine), Matt Fox (Shai Hulud), George Van Orsdel (The Van Orsdels, Jobbernowl), and the Metal Wolf (Stickshift Lover) in the near future as soon as I get them in.
The Alex Del Bueno benefit show happened this past Thursday and from what I heard it was incredible. Churchills was sold out and they were able to raise money for Alex's family. Very big ups to John McHale, Bundie, and Mark Clap at New Art School for putting all of it together.
Lastly, Im heading up to New Jersey on Thursday morning so no post til Monday.

Im gonna say it flat out and not pull any punches: Meantime, in my opinion, is the best current hardcore band in Florida. I had a chance to see them over the summer and they had so much energy and the kids were going off. They just released a 7 inch on Double or Nothing Records and have been touring and playing shows nonstop since its release. I was told that the band is straight edge and some of the members are vegan/vegetarian. The band sent me this to help clarify their views:

"We are a straight edge band. Issues that Alex and some members of the band stress are vegetarianism/veganism; using every ounce of hate in your body to change the things you hate about this world; that eating meat/lifting weights/drinking/etc (anything that people think make you manly) are not real ways to judge someone, not relying on a "higher power" as a crutch or one to cast blame to for your own stupid decisions"

Pontius Pilot

Pontius Pilot was the band that Juan Montoya (Ed Matus' Struggle, Torche) started during the early years of Ed Matus' Struggle. I never saw em but they were pretty amazing. The quality of this recording isnt incredible but its a great listen. Give it a listen and see what you think. If anyone has more info, pass it on

Last week, the South Florida scene lost one our own in Alex Del Bueno. A long time supporter of the South Florida scene, Alex had been a member of Straight Youth, DNME, and Mindframe. This Friday there will be a memorial show and benefit to help his family after this tragic loss. If youre in the area, go support. If you can't stay for the show donate a dollar...every bit helps. This is the demo that started it all for this Miami Punk band. Fast, Fat Wreck style punk with lots of melody. This has 2 songs, one of which was never re-recorded (to the best of my knowledge). I prefer the version of Plastic World on here to the full length. This is when Andres was still playing drums and singing. Im pretty sure I got this in 1996...correct me if Im wrong. Either way, great starting point for this great band
