Dance Floor Justice

City: Miami
Years Active: 2002 - Present
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/dancefloorjustice305

From the Double or Nothing records website:

Born from the ashes of some of the finest bands ever to come out of South Florida, Dance Floor Justice is the newest in a long line representing South Florida hardcore. Featuring current and ex-members of Until the End, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, All Hell Breaks Loose, Destro and Dead Weight, Dance Floor Justice came together with the idea of playing fast, furious hardcore with a touch of melody, something that the South Florida scene was missing. The EP "We Gotcha Covered" was given away free at the CD release show.

Where Fear And Weapons Meet

City: Miami/Ft. Lauderdale
Years Active: 1998 - 2004
Type Of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: n/a

Bringing back fast hardcore in a huge way, Where Fear and Weapons Meet was a complete change for guitar player John Wylie who had previously been in Culture and Morning Again. To see "The Weapon" live is indescribable. So much energy and Alex was just an incredible frontman. Of all the bands in South Florida, this is generally the one everyone asks to do a reunion show. I saw them loads of time and it was always incredible. Members were in and went on to Poison the Well, Last Minute, The Rocking Horse Winner, Culture, Morning Again, Night of Broken Glass, Until the End, Beyond Reason, Powerhouse, Machine, The Judas Factor, 108, Backlash, Dance Floor Justice, Destro, and All Hell Breaks Loose.

Culture

City: Ft. Lauderdale, then Gainesville
Years Active: 1993 - 1998
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/xxxculturexxx

Culture is where the legend of Damien Moyal began. He would later join other bands and the legend would continue but this is where it began. Culture started in Ft. Lauderdale and to my knowledge were the first Vegan Straight Edge band in South Florida. After 1995 or 96, they very rarely played South Florida so I only saw them a few times but they were awesome. Damien really knew how to work a crowd. While the band was never huge in the US, they were like gods in Europe. If you get a chance, check out the Culture Myspace which is run by an awesome guy named Alex. He has loads of information including band member timelines and pictures of old merch so take the time and check it out. Members were in and went on to As Friends Rust, Shai Hulud, Bird of Ill Omen, Bridgeburne R, Morning Again, Blood Has Been Shed, Terror, One Nation Under, Salem, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Night of Broken Glass, Until the End and Trust No One.

Tension

City: Ft. Lauderdale
Years Active: 1993 - 1997
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/tensionsfhc

From 1993 - 1997, Tension was South Florida straight edge. To understand the power of their live show around this time was something you just had to see to believe. So much energy and I always felt that Mike a great lyricist who could really work the crowd. They released the "In Our Time" 7 inch which was followed by (in my opinion) a true classic "The Sickness of Our Age". They later released their only full length "Agent of the People". Check out one of the greatest bands to ever come out of South Florida. Members were in and went on to Endure, Shai Hulud, Strongarm, and Further Seems Forever.

Bio taken from the Tension Myspace:

"TENSION (1993-1997) A long time ago, in a neighborhood not so far away... A band was formed, a band that brought the house down on its good days, a band based on friendship, a band that unfortunately didn't last for very long... That band was Tension... In 1993 Singer Mike Hurley at the time was the frontman for Endure, which many members of Strongarm were also in, and they were a great band that many would go see... Mike Hurley met Guitarist Joe Keit, who was helping out in a band called the Murrychesstoes and the 2 quickly became good friends... They both already were good friends with Chris Michealis, and Mike & Chris began plans to start a new band and to them Joe was the man for the job on guitar... Joe started playing guitar very young and along with Matt Fox of Shai Hulud formed a few bands in their teens. Joe was used to writing his own music and lyrics from an early age and together with Mike Hurley some great songs and lyrics were born... Nick Dominguez from Strongarm & Endure came in on bass guitar and together the 4 created the orginal frame of Tension... After the 1st phone conversation between Joe, Mike & Chris, Mike decided to meet that very night, and in that night 6 songe were written... The songs of course sounded similar to each other, but were very raw and became the 6 songs recorded 2 weeks later in the studion as Tension's 1st release "In Our Time"... Tension quickly began playing shows and right away friends and new fans came out and supported Tension and helped make the shows exciting & fun... Tension was being aired on College radio and was doing small tours throughout Florida and the east coast trying to get the music out... With the formation of Strongarm, Nick Dominguez left to play guitar with them and Ray Rodriguez joined in on bass... The song writing was getting better and more intense new songs were being developed and shortly after the next ep "Sickness of Our Age" was released... In the studio that day, a girl Joe was dating broke it off, and Chris & Joe had an arguement which really helped fuel the fire to give "Sickness" that anger and edge it definitely has... To this day Tension fans agree that "Sickness of Our Age" is the best and most raw of Tension's releases... After more shows and more songs and the sucess of Tension, drummer Chris Michalis took a leave to pursue other things and long time friend and old band mate of Joe's Eric Leon joined up... After Eric Leon Joined up, the shows and songs were more intense and better than ever, Tension was at its peak and realization of the little Bomb from Florida that it really was... So many of the friends of Tension made what was accomplished back then possible... Tension was awarded a Slammie Award for best new band, and was in negotiations with a few major record labels to try and get a release and tour... Being from Pompano and being probably the most ghetto and broke hardcore band, Tension put out an ep on Endless Fight Records (Sickness of our Age) out of Conneticut and later that same ep was re-released by Uprising Records out of California along with Tensions last release, an LP "Agent of the People".... While in negotiations with a record label in Germany, Tension recorded a single called "Stand Aside", which is the only recording featuring drummer Eric Leon, this single was only released in Germany....... Due to reasons unmentionable, Eric Leon had to leave Tension and was replaced by drummer Mike Mcdermit who was with "L.U.N.G.S.", Mike was a great addition to the band and an amazing drummer, he is the drummer on "Agent of the People".... Also Tension had more members than "Spinal Tap".... Included in the band were long time friends: Matt Fox (Shai Hulud, Murrychesstoes), Ray Souza (Hit the Morror, LOAD, Murrychesstoes), Little Chad (New Found Glory), Kenny Fontaine (Kenny Steel, the steel is for real), John Wiley and a few more here and there...... Tension has played with some great bands and some big names, from Shelter, Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, Strife and believe it or not, Maryilyn Manson... hahaha!..........We hope this myspace page and can be a place for old friends to re-unite and for us to remember some great tracks by a group of friends who love to bring the house down..... Thank you all for your support in the past and for your interest in TENSION.... let's keep it real......"

One Day Away

City: Coral Springs
Years Active: 1999 - 2000
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: n/a

Another band that was poised to break out and do something but then broke up. ODA featured a post Keepsake and pre-Until the End Dan Mazin on bass and Ryan Reeb's (Forever and a Day, Last Minute) little brother, Adam, on vocals along with Derek Davis as well. Having just a demo out, they really built a following and then broke up. The good ones always do. Members were in and went on to Keepsake and Until the End.

Set Apart

City: Sweetwater (Miami)
Years Active: 1995 - 1998 (roughly)
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: n/a

Set Apart was the other Christian hardcore band in South Florida in the 90s. I saw them when they released their demo but wasn't too impressed. I saw them a little later on after they released their split with Chalice and was seriously impressed. They had this energy that you just had to see and a great stage presence. Jason, to this day, is still one of my all time favorite frontmen in hardcore and its gonna take alot to have that replaced. They toured and played Cornerstone a few times but ultimately broke up when the guitar player got married. If anyone has a copy of the demo on Overpass records, please let me know as my copy has been lost to the ages. Members went on to Glasseater and More Than Ever

Strongarm

City: Ft. Lauderdale
Years Active: 1993 - 1999 (roughly)
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/strongarm

Alot of people in the hardcore scene frown upon Christian hardcore and I can understand why. Many object to the preaching during the sets and the blatant (obviously) religious message but going to shows in South Florida we always had 2 bands that did neither of these during their sets: Strongarm and Set Apart (which will be up soon). Basically, Strongarm got on stage and said "this is what we believe, if you don't believe it it's cool." In the numerous times I saw them, very little preaching ever went on. Strongarm has a very distinct sound and to this day many have tried to copy it but few have been able to duplicate it (Shai Hulud has a very heavy Strongarm influence). I was happy that I was able to see them one last time at Furnace Fest in 2000...there has also been talk of a reunion of sorts. Ill be crossing my fingers for that one...
Their demo is available for download while the other demo that was never released has eluded me. If anyone has it, please get in touch with me. Both of their full lengths "Atonement" and "The Advent of a Miracle" are still available through Solid State Records. Members were in previously and went on to Endure, Ichtus, Tension, Further Seems Forever and Shai Hulud.

Shai Hulud

City: Pompano Beach and Poughkeepsie, NY
Years Active: 1995 - Present
Type Of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/profoundhatred

Shai Hulud was a band that when I heard the name I said "Are they Hare Krishnas?". I can remember my friend coming back from seeing them and saying "You got to hear this band Shai Hulud...they have a kid singing for them who's 14 and he's got this voice...". I had to hear it for myself and was blown away by the mighty mite Chad, at the young age of 14. Chad quit to pursue New Found Glory and the unit eventually moved to NY for touring purposes. One of my all time favorite bands and still a great live act. All of their material can still be purchased through Revelation Records and they will be releasing a new record on Metal Blade in May. Also, this is another band that Damien Moyal was a part of. Their demo is by far one of my all time favorite recordings of any band ever. If you like his vocals in Morning Again, then you will love this. The 6 song demo appears on the Comprehensive Retrospect record.

Level Nine

City: Miami
Years Active: 1995 - 1997 (roughly)
Type of Music: Hardcore
Myspace or Website: n/a

Level Nine was one of the first local bands I ever saw and man were they awesome live. They really had a stripped down Rage Against The Machine feel but with less technicality, more chug breakdowns, and some rapping. As I got a little older and started going to more and more shows I kinda drifted away from them and got into other things, eventually just passing them off as a rap rock band. Later on, I got a copy of their demo as mine had been lost and man was I blown away. I thought about the energy they had live and how John commanded the stage when he was up there. I can look back now with fond memories and enjoy both demos. They broke up in 1997 (if I remember correctly) and had been talking to some label (Tommy Boy I think) but nothing ever happened. Joel went on to play in School For Heroes and Endo and Eddie played guitar in Darwin's Waiting Room.

City: Miami
Years Active: 1995 - 2000 (roughly)
Type Of Music: Punk
Myspace or Website: http://www.myspace.com/ripfp

Had Foolproof gotten the right push, they would have been huge. A great blend of Fat Wreck style punk and 90's Pop Punk, they broke up before they really got the push they needed and deserved. They also released a great demo which I have since lost, so if anyone has it, upload it so I can post it. This is their only full length. Members has previously been in Poison The Well.
