This includes the song "Hialeah" which, to be honest, has some of the best lyrics ever written. Im working on tracking down the remaining tracks but until then heres what I have. Defy

Defy will always be remembered as Jeff from Poison The Well's first band. Slow, chugging hardcore, I saw them play the Krishna temple in Miami where they covered No Spiritual Surrender (how appropriate). I remember thinking if they stick around they could do something. As always, they broke up but this demo was recorded and sold at their shows. I wanna say I remember a rumor of a second demo but I have no idea if thats true. If anyone knows any info on that demo or has info to add, please drop me a line.

Sorry for the lack of updates this week. I've just been super busy with school and I havent been able to get anything posted. I did speak to Amy who used to run Fiddler Records and she informed me that she is in the process of making the entire Fiddler Records catalog available through Itunes. Hankshaw

Hankshaw is a band I never got to see and it seriously bums me out. They were such a great blend of pop and indie rock that you couldnt help singing along. My friend Roy played their full length, "Nothing Personal" for me and asked if the singer was male or female. I was blown away when I found out the singer, "Harold", was a man. His voice is so high and sweet that I couldnt believe it. The first time I remember them coming down was with Overcast (???!?!?!?) and I didnt go for some reason. Again I missed them with The Get Up Kids right after Nothing Personal came out. Anyway, they were great but after Everyday I Wish You Harm, I just lost interest in their later material. But these three records are incredible and still get regular listens. As far as I know, the full length is out of print as it was originally on Network Sound and then re-released by No Idea. I checked the No Idea site and they didnt have it listed. If it is in print, someone let me know and Ill take it down.

Founded in 1997, anchorman hails from Pompano Beach, Florida. Veterans of numerous popular South Florida bands including Vacant Andys, Radio Baghdad, Pivot, and Hudson, anchorman’s lineup is as follows: Stylistically, anchorman’s sound is a blend of various musical influences, culminating in high-energy, melodic punk rock songs. anchorman’s first release, Still need you more than air (1998 CD EP), has been distributed around the world and various tracks have appeared on numerous compilations. In the summer of 2001, anchorman released it’s second record, Seasoned Smart Ass. In the past year, anchorman has played the 2000 Vans Warped Tour, as well as smaller tours and shows throughout Florida. Recently, anchorman has shared the stage with a wide variety of acts including Iggy Pop, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, a new found glory, Against All Authority, Dashboard Confessional, The Specials, King Django and Wesley Willis. Notes From The South

Awesome 7 inch comp that was released by Youth Bus Records in 1991 or 1992. This comp featured some bands that were making waves in South Florida at that time: The Believers, Hangman (featuring Stan Obal of Timescape Zero, Culture, and King 7 and the Soulsonics), Beyond Reason (featuring Jason Lederman of Where Fear and Weapons Meet and Machine), and Ego-Trip (featuring Rich Thurston of Culture and Terror). Also noted is Old School John in the white shirt on the cover. He was a constant fixture at shows from 1988 to 1997 when he moved to Orlando. I havent seen him in years...hope hes doing alright.

Burning Strong

Burning Strong wasn't around for very long. I never saw them but this practice tape is awesome. Remember getting together to practice with your friends, hooking up that boom box radio to record and then listening back and it sounded awful? Yeah...this isn't case. This sounds pretty damn good (not studio quality) for a tape recording. The band featured future Bird of Ill Omen member Tom as well as "Fed Up" Frank who wrote Fed Up zine in the early 90s. Like I said, I don't know a whole lot about them but these songs are real good. The band eventually changed their name to Stonecast before starting Bird of Ill Omen. Members were in and went on to Bird of Ill Omen, Salem, As Friends Rust and Dead Mens Theory

The Stun Guns - I Can't Believe Its Not Murder

They sure didn't feel like "glory days"... 1992. It was hot in Miami, and the city was wrecked from Hurricane Andrew. George Kelley and Mark Fehan from the Trash Monkeys got together with Paul Lecours of Lethal Yellow. Songs were written, beers were consumed, they soon enough hooked up with another once-Trash Monkey's little brother, Andrew Ross Powell, on drums, and started playing as the Stun Guns. A demo was recorded at Sync studios on Miami Beach, and word seemed to be getting around about the songs on the tape. Word also seemed to be getting around about the live shows, which were drunken blurs of flying bottles and chairs and endless guitar tuning, with a couple of songs in there somewhere. People liked this, it seemed. In 93 or 94 Mark had a good idea. He left the band and joined up with Harry Pussy, a band with yet another Trash Monkey, and did some real tours where they got paid and stuff. The Stun Guns went on a brief hiatus/drinking binge, and when the woke up they had Brian Bush from Chickenhead/Los Canadians on guitar. The people at the shows got drunk, a 7" was recorded and released by Miami's Starcrunch Records, a live song appeared on a comp from Space Caddette records, a small fortune was spent on beer at the store by George's house, AND a tour was planned. Two months with the Shaffers from Dalton,GA, Summer '95. The Shaffers, it turned out, were the coolest people on the planet, and this was probably the best time of our lives, except for that last week, but never mind that. While on the west coast we hooked up with the members of FYP who put us up in San Pedro for like a week, fed us, got us stoned, and eventually released our next 7" on their label, Recess Records. Well, 1996-97 on, some more touring was done, shows were played, and we even recorded again. But after a while things fell apart. I mean, we were a pretty volatile bunch. We even got together for a couple of shows after we all moved away from Miami. These shows were mostly in Chattanooga (the polar opposite of Miami), and ranged from great to so bad we didn't even make it through one song. Well, that's how we rolled.

Against All Authority (often abbreviated -AAA-) is a DIY ska punk band. They were founded in Miami, Florida in 1992,^[1] driven by willingness to promote their message—"questioning our economic differences and promoting our human similarities", as stated by their official site. A strong engagement in political and social issues is clearly evident in their lyrics. The band maintain a fierce DIY stance influenced by the approach of the Dead Kennedys and Subhumans.^[2] Early in their career the band decided to book concerts, make recordings and even produce band t-shirts on their own.^[1] Later they signed on independent label Hopeless Records, becoming one of their major bands. In addition to touring and recording, the band is frequently involved in demonstrations and social projects.

Destroy What Destroys You was their first full length on the now defunct Far Out Records. As far as I know, this record has not been re-released and its a shame. While I didnt care for them years ago, it really has grown on me. Rumor has it they broke up recently...hope its not true.

Bingo Mut

So what is so significant about Bingo Mut? Matt Fox played drums for them before starting Shai Hulud thats what. I can look back now and appreciate this record though when I first heard it I did not care for it (probably because I was trying to be Mr. Hardcore Elitist). Now I can listen back and enjoy it. If anyone has further information on the band, please let me know so I can add it. Also this was released by Far Out Records who seemed to have their hands in everything punk/ska that came out of South Florida. Just a heads up, Matt informed me that he has a recording that was supposed to be their second 7 inch but was never released. He's in Europe right now but when he gets back Ill try and get it posted. Also, thanks to Alex who noted that Pete Careeno who played bass in Culture played in Bingo Mut. Thanks also goes out to Joe Basi
for letting us know that Bingo Mut Founding Member and Bassist Tim McGrath went on to form the Jive Step Bunch and King 7 and the Soulsonics and played bass in both bands. He is also a well known Tattoo Artist - was previously at Babylon Tattoo and is now living in Georgia.

An update on updates

I saw Out of Spite quite a few times and to be honest I don't remember much about them. They played Madball influenced hardcore and had a good following in South Florida. They released a demo and a 7 inch, both on Rick Ta Life's "Back Ta Basics" records. I swear there was another demo but I can't remember for sure. I've been straight edge for over 13 years now and I still get pumped on straight edge bands. When Dan Mazin (bass) told me about the new straight edge band, Until the End, he started with John Wylie on our trip to Hellfest 2000 I was psyched. I was still hoping that John would start up Morning Again again but nonetheless I was pumped. They played their first show in October of 2000 and it was great. They played in hoodies with bandanas over their faces and all X'd up. The record was good, not great but the following year they released "Blood In The Ink" which was just incredible. After this came out, seeing them live was like watching small prison riots. I was fortunate to join the band and play with them till they called it quits. Members were in and have gone on to Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Culture, Organized Pain, Night of Broken Glass, Keepsake, One Day Away, Destro, Dance Floor Justice, All Hell Breaks Loose, Remembering Never, Bishop, Poison the Well, Morning Again, and loads more.

Update on Last Minute

I received a message from Duane Hosein who sings in A Jealousy Issue last night. He told me tat he has the song that Ryan is describing in the Last Minute post on a cassette. When I go down to Miami, Ill be able to transfer it and get it posted but that wont be til August so keep that in mind. I've been trying to get my hands on this for so damn long and finally here it is: Last Minute. Last Minute more or less became Forever and a Day and Poison The Well after their breakup. Ryan Reeb, vocals, was nice enough to send this to me as well as a a brief history as well as 2 amazing stories. Heres what he had to say:

Last Minutes original members were- D. Ryan Reeb, Nick Schuhmann, Michael Crigler, Ryan Primack and Vaughn Glenn. In their formative years, Last Minute rehearsed and came of age in Ryan Reebs Garage, also known as the offices of Omni Outdoors (Bruce Reebs Landscaping company.) Ryan Primack, Mike and Nick Met at Taravella High school. Ryan Reeb and Vaughn met at Douglas high school. After all having performed in failed bands previously they decided to get together and form Dog Waffle. Dog waffle came from Reebs obsession with Gorilla Biscuits. After playing out a few times and not having the response they desired, Dog Waffle became Last Minute. Last Minute played quite often at CHEERS in Miami, which is now sadly a fucking Quiznos or Party superstore. LM wrote 60+ songs as a band, signed to Eulogy Recordings in hopes of being Eulogy #1 release. LM recorded 12 songs at Studio 13 in Deerfield FL, was shortly dropped from Eulogy for not being "Hardcore Enough" and thusly taking the wind out of the sails to stardom. This dramatic shift in the future of the band caused a ripple that would eventually break up the current line up. Ryan Primack became more interested in hardcore, Vaughn became more of an asshole. One fateful day in the Last Minute / Morning Again / New Found Glory warehouse in Pompano, the tables turned. Ryan Primack and Vaughn were having a rough day at practice which led to a falling out. Vaughn lifted Ryans Bass up by the neck and began urinating up and down the body of the guitar. This was Vaughns last practice with the band. Later that week the LM boys had plans to see Face to Face, GutterMouth, and some other bands at the Edge. We were ordered by Vaughn to return his leftover microphones and misc drum accessories to him at the show. In Nicks white Ford Escort we drove to downtown Ft Lauderdale with Vaughns equipment in tow. Moments before arriving to the venue a storm of fierce slandering of Vaughn began. This led to the defication into a box containing Vaughn's musical reminants by Reeb. The look on Vaughns face as he opened his box of shit was a priceless end to an awesome drummer. Shorty after Vaughn Glenn left the band, an up and coming little sexy man from Davie FL named Chris Hornbrook auditioned for Last Minute and became the new and improved drummer. Last Minute attempted to recored one more time in Saint Pete. They recorded a one song single which was truly amazing. To this day, a digital file of this song is yet to be found. If anybody is aware of the location of this song, please be in touch.

Mike Crigler Ryan Primack & D. Ryan Reeb wrote the lyrics to this in 90 degree South Florida heat in our non-air conditioned shitty warehouse in Pompano. It was so fun looking back. It was at a time in our lives where Mike, Ryan and I were going through some seriously horrible experiences in our lives. When we would play this song on stage it was a way for the three of us to look each other in the eyes and connect over something that made us truly happy. This was probably my favorite song to play live. There is a part in this song that whenever we would play it the 305 kick boxing team, COACH, Clapkick, sXe Derek from Philly, Russ Saunders, and the rest of you, you know who you are (possibly "Brooklyn" <3 ), would mosh it up. I would be able to stage dive with the mic into the crowd and not hit the floor. So fucking fun. This song was written about certain verbally and physically abusive parents, bad girlfriends who would cheat on us with certain singers of Keepsake LOL, and the rest of the typical teen angst that stinky kids like us would bitch about. I love how these songs keep trickling in, 7 down 5 more to go. PLEASE help me find the rest. I would especially like to find the song "Cause for Alarm" aka Fight Poverty!

Discount played South Florida so much that they may have well moved down. They seriously played down here at least once a month for like 2 years straight. My friend Roy was absolutely nuts about them and would trek all over to see them. I'm going to be making posts for them in parts because to be honest, they released a lot of material. Here is part 1. They did a great cover of R.E.M.'s "Its the End of the World" at the end of this record. I'm pretty sure this was their first full length (Ill have to ask Roy to make sure).

Discount formed in Vero Beach, Florida in early 1995, a year in which most of its members were still in junior high school. The band, immediately active, began playing shows all over the state of Florida and bringing other bands to their previously musically barren hometown. Their first release, a self-released cassette, found it's way into the hands of Tim Lyman of San Diego's Liquid Meat Records. He liked what he heard and offered to release a seven inch. This began a relationship that has seen Tim, under various label names, release the three Discount full-lengths. Their newest, Crash Diagnostic, is on his newly formed label, New American Dream. Discount's continued loyalty to Tim Lyman is in keeping with their wishes to release music through independent record labels and to do business with people whom they consider friends.

Since 1995 Discount has: toured the United States extensively, released a battery of singles and EPs on various independent labels on 4 different continents, recorded an EP of Billy Bragg covers and toured Japan and Europe twice. Discount relocated to Gainesville and wrote their third full length album. Thus, their most recent project, Crash Diagnostic, recorded by Jay Robbins at Washington, DC's Inner Ear Studios. The album contains 13 songs.

The band has since broken up but did release a 2 disc singles collection.

Vacant Andys

Vacant Andys will always be remembered as one of the first times that Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) took center stage. What they should be remembered for is making great music which is what they did. All superior musicians, the band on stage was so much fun. John Owens knew how to talk to a crowd even if he was making jokes a good portion of the time. The Bonebrake brothers on bass and drums rounded out the band. Their style of melodic indie rock did have an aggressive and punk edge to it and you could usually count on a cover of Inside Out's "Burning Fight" or Quicksand "Thorn In My Side". This is yet another occasion where I truly feel they never got their due and broke up before they should have. Im hoping that someday someone will release all of their early material on one disc. I only have their two 7 inches so if anyone has their earlier material please get in touch with me. Members went on Anchorman, Dashboard Confessional, Seville, The Agency, Further Seems Forever, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, and The Enablers.
